Dress Code and Common Courtesy
RCSD Dress and Appearance Expectations
As a Catholic School we help our students understand that modesty is an essential part of who we are and what we represent. Students are expected to dress in appropriate clothing that is suitable for the weather and that represents the values we express in our Catholic faith. Clothing such as muscle shirts, open backs, spaghetti straps, bare midriffs, short skirts/shorts, and bandanas are not acceptable. In general, students will be expected to have a clean appearance that is reasonable, modest, decent, and respectable.
Interpretation of These RCSD Expectations
The school administration discusses with each staff member the interpretation of the above expectations and the operational guidelines below and this is shared in each of our classrooms. Teachers ensure that students understand these expectations using current examples of what 5 - 14 years old are currently wearing. In addition, we also have agreed upon operational guidelines that students and staff are expected to follow. We aim to maintain a learning environment focused on accomplishing our school mission and vision. This list includes but is not limited to:
1. Clothing with phrases and graphics which conflict with our Guardian Expected Behaviours and our Values are unacceptable.
2. Upon entry in the school, we agree to remove our outdoor shoes and our hats to demonstrate common courtesy and respect for our school.
3. Students in Grades 5 to 8 are provided time and space to change out for gym class. These students need to change out.
A staff member who observes a student who is not meeting these expectations will inform the administration so they can address the concern. This will involve a discrete conversation with the student and a phone call with the parents to explain the expectation. For an obvious and intentional violation, a temporary solution will be implemented. In all situations, we are looking for the best outcome in a teachable moment.
